After a brainstorm session, Kirk, Michael and I finally came up with a project proposal for the Design Interactions class. We wanted to do something that we could relate to, that we’re passionate about and that we could work on long after class is done. The winning idea came from the concept of Kirk’s existing lofi-histyle website, which we decided to design and develop further to actually include a whole online community and social media aspect. So here’s our thinking…tell us what y’all (Michael’s accent) think!
The idea
Create an online community and resource center to help people tell their stories digitally using consumer-accessible technology like cell phone cameras, Flip Videos and open-source editing software, etc. Our mission is to elevate the amateur’s ability to tell their stories with high production values.
This is a very rough wireframe that we developed in our working session:
Why lofi-histyle:
With the proliferation of cheaper and easy-to-use technology like iPhones and iPods, there are millions of amateur film makers and photographers waiting to create and share interesting work. Many simply just don’t know they have already the tools or how to maximize them. That’s where we come in. There are no longer expensive and time consuming barriers to entry for an amateur of any age to create content, but there are very few resources for amateurs to learn how to do more with budget-technology. Our theme which will also be prevalent throughout the design of our site: you can do more with less!
Scope
Our final deliverable is a functioning website/blog showcasing lo-fi tutorials (videos, podcasts and visuals diagrams) with a community and/or contest page for iPhone photos. We will use open-source platform (worpdress.org). In the process of developing this we will create the following deliverables:
- sitemap
- wireframes
- comps of homepage and inner pages
- at least two tutorials
- iPhone photo contest page
- A downloadable application photoshop script for iphone pictures and lightroom
Note: We have base content and a site that we will leverage for our project at http://lofihistyle.com
Our Design Principles:
- Straight forward, no tech language
- Affordable but cool
- Anybody can do it
- Show & Tell, with actual examples not long abstract explanations
- Visual explanations, not text heavy
- Bite size information (nothing intimidating)
Who is it for?
Our target audience is likely young professionals (20s-30s) who may not quite be as savvy as a younger generation with technological tools, but who have a story to tell and a desire to learn. They tend to be on a limited budget, yet have a good sense of style – like Ikea shoppers.
Upon first glance at our site, we want our audience to immediately feel like they can create low budget content in high style. Because we hope to attract even older folks who are even less technologically inclined, the design should be as clean and unintimidating as possible. As Shelley Amstrong said we want our audience to sense our theme of ‘you can do it.’
